Malmö International String Festival, March 23–25 2012

Catgut near the shores of the Kattegat

Malmö, at the southern tip of Sweden is the country’s third-largest city and – over the decade or since it became linked to Copenhagen by the 8 km Öresund Bridge – has redefined itself with some impressive and imaginative urban development (most notably Calatrava’s ‘Turning Torso’ skyscraper) and a vibrant arts scene.

A new addition to its cultural landscape is the Malmö International String Festival, a weekend of world-class chamber music, staged in association with the city’s Academy of Music and running this year on 23, 24 and 25 of March.

Artistic Director of the festival is British violinist Matthew Trusler, who teaches at the Malmö Academy of Music when not travelling the world from his base in Paris to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing on the occasional movie soundtrack, running the Orchid Classics CD label and even heading up a charity for critically ill young children.

Trusler explains:

”The theme of the 2012 festival is ”Youth”. Over the weekend five concerts will feature composers who wrote extraordinary works at prodigiously young ages, as well as music written for or inspired by children.

The idea of this mini-festival is to have three days of concerts and masterclasses, combining traditions and bringing together many internationally known artists. The festival will see musicians from all over the world perform concerts and give masterclasses, both at the wonderful Palladium and at the Malmo Academy of Music.”

Historical venue

The venue for the festival is Malmö’s splendid Palladium, originally opened in the 1920s and blending a neo-Classical marble foyer with an auditorium of gilded extravagance. It reopened as a 500-seat hall in 2004 after extensive renovation and hosts music, dance, film and other events such as stand-up comedy.
