Research area: Gender and creative music making with digital tools

The aim of my study is to examine how gender norms can be challenged in creative music making by using digital tools. My specific research interest of this thesis is to explore music making with digital tools based on a music pedagogical and feminist cultural studies perspective. With this thesis, I want to increase the knowledge of how equality can be achieved from a music pedagogical research field perspective as well as in the music field in general.

In order to answer the question I want to examine and describe the process of music making applying digital tools among young people aged between 13 and19 who identify themselves as girls or women. I will study the creative music making, which takes place in school but also at leisure time. Methodologically I intend to use visual ethnography based on photography, video and social media.
