Composition Diploma

MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN MUSIC · 120 CREDITS · 2 YEARS

Master’s Programme in Music, Composition Diploma is aimed at those of you who want to develop your artistry as a composer with a focus on Western contemporary art music. The education aims to train composers with very high artistic and professional ability through a specialized composition education with a focus on highly qualified tasks.

The studies involve in-depth study and specialization in orchestral composition and other major projects in collaboration with professional institutions and ensembles, which places great demands on work discipline and responsibility.

After completing the education, you must have well-developed knowledge and skills as well as a personal aesthetic and attitude to your creation and ability to create music at a high artistic level. Furthermore, you must have acquired an in-depth knowledge of composition for varying instrumental ensembles and be prepared to work and act independently on a professional level in the various forms of working life in a changing cultural life. You must also have developed the ability to study in a self-directed or independent way. Teaching is given in composition in the form of individual lessons and seminars. Projects and degree project are included.

Composition Projects

One of the most indispensable and unique features of the Malmö Academy of Music is the capacity to deliver many performance opportunities every year. As is well known, this is the basis, often lacking, for the efficient development of a composer’s concrete relationship with music itself.

The composition programme collaborates with leading orchestras, ensembles and musicians, such as the Malmö, Norrköping, Gävle and Helsingborg symphony orchestras, the Swedish Wind Ensemble, Jönköping Sinfonietta and Musica Vitae. The students gain the opportunity during their studies to build up an extensive network of contacts.

Connect Festival

– a contemporary music festival organised by the students.

Inter Arts Centre

– our platform for electro-acoustic music and a meeting place for collaborations with other art forms such as theatre and the visual arts.

The Composition Seminar

– a forum for aesthetic discussions, analysis, reflection and meetings with visiting professors, composers and musicians within the field of contemporary art music.

Programme Syllabus

Bent Sørensen, Professor in Composition
Rolf Martinsson, Professor in Music Theory, Arranging and Composition

Reminder

Please note, that to meet the entry requirements for Master’s Level, you have to be able to demonstrate a Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent at the beginning of the semester.
