Admission test
Round I (uploaded samples of work)
You are required to submit video recordings of:
- Two songs/pieces of contrasting character within your specialty, one of which must be performed solo. You must play or sing on your main instrument within your genre. If you prefer accompaniment for the second song, you may perform with other musicians or use a pre-recorded backing track.
- The total duration of both songs must not exceed 10 minutes. Choose pieces that showcase different aspects of your playing but also demonstrate in-depth knowledge of at least one folk or world music tradition.
Round II (uploaded samples of work)
You are required to submit video recordings of:
- An additional song/piece of your choice within your specialty. This should ideally showcase a different aspect of your musicianship than the previous two pieces. You must play or sing on your main instrument within your genre. If you prefer accompaniment, you may perform with other musicians or use a pre-recorded backing track. The total duration must not exceed 5 minutes.
- You will receive access to a folder containing sheet music and recordings of three pre-recorded songs. You must record yourself performing one of these songs, choosing the one you feel suits you best. Ensure both the backing track and your performance are audible in the video, prioritizing your performance. If the key of the selected song is unsuitable for you, you may transpose it using appropriate software, but you may not alter the tempo. Instructions for playing specific parts based on your instrument will be provided in the same folder.
All recordings must be uploaded to the Malmö Academy of Music via the link provided below.
3. On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, you will participate in three live test components via Zoom:
- Sight-reading test: You will be sent a piece of sheet music and given one minute to review it before attempting to play it in front of the camera. An example of a sight-reading task can be found here:
https://lu.box.com/s/dhgu7q7168n7c324jh2nylwzgt4mnpla
- Ear training test: You will listen to short melodic phrases and attempt to replicate them on your instrument.
- Interview: We will ask about your previous experiences as a musician and your motivations for applying to the program.
While these components are important for the overall assessment, none of them are individually decisive. It is not mandatory to pass all three tests to be admitted.
The live test will also assess your proficiency in English to ensure you can follow the program. For this reason, the entire session will be conducted in English. The three components will take approximately 10 minutes in total. More detailed information, including a schedule, will be provided in your invitation after the application deadline.
If admitted, you will take a diagnostic theory test at the start of the term to determine the appropriate level of theory instruction for you.
No additional eligibility tests are required. The theory test is diagnostic only.
