Admission test
The admission test consists of two rounds, both conducted remotely. You must pass Round 1 to proceed to Round 2.
MAIN INSTRUMENT TEST
Round 1 (uploaded work samples)
Submit video recordings where you perform:
- two (2) pieces or songs of different character within your specialisation, played or sung on your main instrument within your genre. At least one of the pieces must be performed solo. If you wish to have accompaniment for the second piece, you may perform with one or more musicians or use a pre-recorded backing track. The total duration of both pieces must not exceed 10 minutes.
Choose pieces that showcase different aspects of your playing while also demonstrating your in-depth knowledge of at least one folk or world music tradition.
The recordings must be uploaded via the link below no later than 22 February 2025.
Round 2 (uploaded work samples)
Submit video recordings where you perform:
- one (1) additional piece or song of your choice within your specialisation. Preferably, select a piece that highlights a different side of you as a musician compared to the first two. You must perform on your main instrument within your genre. If you wish to have accompaniment, you may perform with other musicians or use a pre-recorded backing track. The total duration of the piece must not exceed 5 minutes.
- As part of the invitation to Round 2, you will receive access to three pre-recorded pieces, along with sheet music and instructions. You must submit a video recording of yourself performing one (1) of these three pieces – you choose which one. Ensure that both the backing music and your playing are clearly audible in the video, with a primary focus on your performance. If the key of the piece does not suit you, you may adjust it using an appropriate programme, but the tempo must remain unchanged.
The recordings must be uploaded via the link below no later than 27 February 2025.
LIVE TEST
On 4 March 2025, you will complete three test components live via Zoom
- A prima vista (sight-reading): You will receive a piece of sheet music, which you will have one minute to review before attempting to play it live on camera.
Exemple of a sight-reading exercise (PDF 17,9kB, new tab)
- Imitating melodic phrases: We will play a few short melodic phrases, and you will be asked to replicate them on your instrument.
- Short interview: We will ask you about your musical background and your reasons for applying to our programme.
These components are important for our assessment, but none of them are decisive – you do not need to pass all three to be admitted. During the Zoom test, you must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency to successfully follow the course. Therefore, the entire test will be conducted in English.
The three components together will take approximately 10 minutes. More detailed information, including the schedule, will be sent via email.
If you are admitted, you will also take a diagnostic theory test at the start of the term to determine the appropriate level of theory instruction for you.
Instructions and criteria for videos
To ensure your video recordings are accepted for assessment, you must follow these instructions:
- Identification: Begin each video by identifying yourself – film your ID or passport, and your face. Clearly state which piece you will be performing.
- Framing: Your face, hands and instrument must be visible at all times.
- Recording: Perform and record one (1) piece/audition task per film. No technical edits are allowed.
- Audio quality: Use your phone's microphone or an external room microphone. The sound should be of good quality, without excessive room acoustics, distortion, or noise.
- Video quality: The video recordings must have good image quality with good contrast and light.
- File format: You must upload the recordings in MP4 format. Other file formats are not allowed. Your folder with work samples must not exceed 5 GB.
If the instructions are not followed, or if the video files are deemed to be modified, your work samples may be considered invalid.
