Admission test

The admission test is carried out in two rounds. Round I will be conducted via digital samples of work (video recordings). If you pass Round I, you will be invited to Round II which will be conducted via digital samples of work (video recordings) and an online admissions test and interview during the second week of March.

AUDITION
Round I (uploaded samples of work)
Submit video recordings where you perform:

  • Two songs of different character in your special music/genre area, of which one must be performed solo. On both recordings you must play your main instrument within your genre. If you want accompaniment on the second song, you are allowed to play with an extra musician(s) or recorded background music. The total playing time for both songs must not exceed 10 minutes.

The recordings must be uploaded to the Malmö Academy of Music via the link below no later than 22 January 2024.

Round II (uploaded samples of work, admissions test, interview and music theory test)
You have to submit two video recordings of yourself. The same instructions for uploading work samples as for Round I apply to Round II. As well as perform an admission test live, be interviewed and a do diagnostic music theory test, all via Zoom.

No later than Sunday 3rd of March 2024 before midnight, you must have uploaded the following samples of work:

  • In the invitation to audition a folder will be sent to you containing sheet music and recordings for three songs sent that we have recorded. You must record yourself on film when you play to one of these songs. You choose which of them you think suits you best. If for some reason the key of the song does not suit you, it is OK to change the key in any program for this, but you are NOT allowed to change the tempo. Instructions for what to play in different parts of the song, depending on what instrument you play, can be found in the same folder. Example – Sheet music for ensemble test (PDF 283 kB, new tab)

  • You must also record another song of your choice duration 3-4 minutes. It may show a slightly different side of you as a folk and world musician than what you showed in part test I, but must still be clearly anchored in the genre.

On Tuesday, 5th of March 2024, you will also do an admissions test with 4 parts that will take place live via zoom. Here you must do the following:

  • A sheet music example will be sent to you that you get one minute to look at, and then try to play live in front of the camera. Example – A vista test (PDF 19,4 kB, new tab)

  • We will play some melodic phrases, and you will try to imitate them on your instrument or voice.

  • We also conduct a short interview where we will ask you a little about what you have done earlier in your life as a musician, and your reasons are for applying to us. The admissions test must show that you speak English well enough to be able to complete the education.

These first three parts will take about 10 minutes. The specific time slot will be included in the invitation to audition, that you will receive after qualifying from Round I.

  • You will also be given a time slot for a diagnostic music theory test, which takes place in a group live on zoom on the same day. Once the test has started, you will receive a link to the test, and you then have 90 minutes to do the test digitally in front of the screen. You must not leave the screen or go outside the video frame, and of course do not ask for help from someone else. If needed, you are allowed to have access to a musical instrument as support during this test. Example of music theory test (PDF 93 kB, new tab)

In order to be able to complete these four parts, you will need to have access to Zoom, sound from the computer (headphones or speakers) and a stable internet connection. These four parts are of great importance for our assessment of you, but none of them is decisive - it is not a requirement to pass all four parts in order to be accepted into the Bachelor programme.

OTHER QUALIFYING TESTS

There are no other qualifying tests in the admissions test in this Bachelor program. The music theory test is diagnostic.

Instructions and criteria for videos

In order for the video recordings to be approved as a basis for assessment, you must follow the instructions below:

  • Start your video recordings by identifying yourself – film your ID or passport, and your face. State which piece you will perform.

  • Your face, hands and instrument must be visible at all times.

  • Perform and record one (1) piece/audition task per film. No clips or other technical edits are allowed.

  • The sound should be of good quality, recorded with the microphone in your mobile phone or with a room microphone, without too much room acoustics and without distortion and noise.

  • The video recordings must have good image quality with good contrast and light.

  • You must upload the recordings in MP4 format. Other file formats are not allowed. Your folder with work samples must not exceed 5 GB.
