Exchange Studies | incoming students
Welcome to Malmö Academy of Music!
Malmö Academy of Music forms part of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts at Lund University. But, as our name indicate, we are located in the city of Malmö. Each year around 1450 students study with us, some take independent courses, but the majority are enrolled in a programme at one of our two specialisations; Performance Studies in Music and and Music Teacher Training. As an exchange student, you select the specialisation that correspond to what you study at your home university.
At Malmö Academy of Music you will find an international and dynamic study climate thanks to our various collaboration agreements, guest teachers and student exchanges.
- You study music at your home university.
- Your home university must have a formal agreement for exchange studies with Malmö Academy of Music (Lund University).
- Your home university must nominate you to an exchange at our Academy before you start your application.
- You must have sufficient knowledge of English. It is recommended that your level of English is equivalent to IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 90. Please check with your home university regarding the required levels to be nominated for an exchange to Lund University.
- You need to apply for (a) course/s within the same field of studies that you are studying at your home university (Performance Studies in Music or Music Teacher Training).
The nomination period for all students (Performance Studies and Music Teacher Training) who want to do an exchange with us during a semester in autumn/spring or full academic year is 15-31 March. The application period is between the 1-15 April.
Second admission round
Students interested in applying for Performance studies can also apply during 1-15 October (nomination period: 15-30 September) but there is a smaller chance of getting admitted since these places normally fill up before summer.
Nomination guidelines will be sent out to all partners approximately one week before the nomination period starts.
Application
Applications are done online in our application system SoleMove. Nominated students will receive an email containing information and instructions on how to complete the online application prior to the application period opens.
Your application needs to contain:
- Official transcript of Records (in English)
- CV
- Statement of Purpose (in English)
- Audition videos
- Passport copy

You also add the courses, one mandatory (see under each programme) and one or more elective course/s, that you like to study at MAM in your application, see course list below.
All courses will be in English. It is therefore important that you have sufficient level of English to be able to successfully study the courses open to exchange students. While we do not generally require you to submit a formal English language proficiency test, your level of English should be equivalent to IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 90.
Learning Agreement
You will be informed of whether you have been accepted at Malmö Academy of Music by 25 May the latest. When you get your Letter of acceptance you need to create a Learning agreement in the system that your own university use, talk to your International Coordinator if you are unsure. In your Learning agreement you state the courses you have chosen.
As an exchange students you are expected to study full-time, 30 ECTS/semester, of which you must study at least 15 ECTS (Music Teacher Training Programme) or 26 ECTS (Music Performance Programme) at Malmö Academy of Music. You may include external courses at other faculties in your application, but you are neither prioritized nor guaranteed admission outside Malmö Academy of Music.
Make sure that your chosen courses match your study plan at home and are approved by your home University.
Music Performance Programmes
Our Performance Programmes in Music offer a wide range of specialisations and prepare musicians and composers for a professional career within different fields of music. Students in these programmes will find a study environment that promotes the highest possible development of their artistic potential.
The tuition consists of a mix between individual and group teaching sessions, seminars, lectures, and workshops/master classes. Students should also expect individual assignments like exercises and preparations as well as playing in ensembles of different sizes and in different settings. If you play an orchestral instrument, you will also participate in Malmö Academy of Music's Symphony Orchestra, which does six productions each academic year.
The teachers at the performance programmes are all distinguished musicians with prominent music careers, both nationally and internationally, as soloists, ensemble/orchestra musicians or composers.
We offer the following genres / specialisations:

- Guitar, Piano, Vocal (classical specialization)
- Jazz / Improvisation / Folk
- Composition
Even if you apply for a full academic year you only apply for Autumn Courses in your SoleMove application. You will get more information regarding Spring Courses during the Autumn.
Note that as an exchange student you apply to the same course regardless if you study at Bachelor or Master level. When admitted you will be placed in a group that match your study level.

- Symphony Orchestra instrument - You submit work samples in the format of video recordings, where you perform two compositions of your choice contrasting in character, maximum 20 minutes of music in total.
- Guitar / Piano / Vocals - You submit work samples in the format of video recordings, where you perform two compositions of your choice contrasting in character, maximum 20 minutes of music in total.
- Jazz / Improvisation / Folk - You submit work samples in the format of video recordings, where you perform two songs of your choice together with a group. Play-along or pre-recorded backing tracks are not accepted. Choose pieces that reflect as much as possible of you as an artist and of your range of expression. Maximum 20 minutes of music in total.
- Composition
1. Four-five (4-5) representative samples of work (compositions) in written form (scores as PDF files) with detailed notes. Include live or synth recordings (as MP3 files) with detailed recording notes. It is important that you submit both scores and sound files.

Music Teacher Training Programme
The Music Teacher Training programme at Malmö Academy of Music is designed to develop both your pedagogical and artistic skills. Our ambition is that you will have as many classes as possible together with our Swedish students.
You choose among the courses in the Course Catalogue, but remember to discuss your decision with a coordinator at your home university since it is important that you can transfer your ETCS at the end of your exchange. You are welcome to do an exchange with us during the autumn semester or during a full academic year. Please note, we offer no admission for spring semester.
When applying you need to state which genre you want to study. This should be the same genre you study at your home university.
We offer the following genres / specialisations:

Even if you apply for a full academic year you only apply for Autumn Courses in your SoleMove application. You will get more information regarding Spring Courses during the Autumn.
Please note that we offer no admission for Spring Semester only within the Teacher Training Programme. The Spring Courses are only open for students that are admitted for the entire academic year.
Record yourself performing three pieces that represent the genre you wish to study at the Malmö Academy of Music. Your selection should demonstrate both musical breadth and depth. Once recorded, upload a document containing YouTube links to your videos as part of your SoleMove application.

Swedish for Exchange Students
Lund University offers an introductory course in Swedish for exchange students. We recommend all international students to sign up for this course. The course gives you 3 ECTS points on top of the 30 ECTS points you get for your music courses.
