Jazz/Improvisation ⎢Performance Programme Master's Level

Welcome to the Jazz Programme at the Malmö Academy of Music

We want to tell you about the Jazz Programme at the Malmö Academy of Music and all that it involves in order to help you find courses in jazz and music improvisation at higher education level which are suitable for you and your needs.

We believe that the vitality of jazz music comes from its constant renewal. This renewal is dependent on that everyone who is involved in improvised music, regardless of style, is able to feel at home and create a place for him/herself within the genre of jazz music.

This demands a great variety of individual voices that have the common ambition to meet and create new music. It is your personal style of expression and your path to discovering it that lets you affect the development of jazz.

Regardless of whether you see yourself as a jazz musician or teacher in the future, it is important that you understand this development process.

We welcome a wide interpretation of the concept of jazz music. Jazz is not only a certain style with its own traditions today, but rather an extremely wide spectrum of various combinations and meetings of different types of musical expression. We therefore see the merging of different genres as a natural part of the development of jazz music.

So regardless where you passion lies within the genre of jazz, as a jazz musician or teacher in the area of improvisation you should not only be prepared to deal with the changing world of jazz but welcome it.

It is out aim to create an atmosphere at the Academy which encourages diversity in our individual voices. This we see as a requirement for the survival of jazz as a form of living music.

We would therefore like to offer those of you who want to study at higher education level programmes and courses which give you the opportunity to find and develop your own individual voice and at the same time develop the basic practical knowledge and skills needed for a career in jazz and improvisational music.
