Gunnel Mauritzson | Folk singer

Gunnel Mauritzson is one of Sweden's foremost folk singers, with a broad repertoire spanning folk music, jazz, ballads, hymns and theatre music. She is also a composer, arranger and singing teacher at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She has received several awards, including SKAP's anniversary scholarship, the Gullin scholarship and the Manifest Prize for best folk music CD.
With roots in Gotland, Gunnel has participated in numerous recordings and concerts both in Sweden and internationally. She leads her own band, GMB, but also collaborates with flamenco guitarist Erik Steen and with Vox Pacis – a project for cultural exchange and religious dialogue – with tours to India and Senegal, among other places.
She has also participated in stage productions such as Antigone in Skärholmen, Från ökenblues till hip hop (From Desert Blues to Hip Hop) and Ljus;Gullin (Light;Gullin) (Riksteatern), and collaborated with musicians such as Jan Allan, Georg Riedel, Anders Nyberg and Bengan Janson.
In 2014, she released the album GJOP – Gotland Jazz Operation Project together with Jean-Simon Maurin, Anders Hagberg and Yasuhito Mori. She also tours with a programme of emigrant songs together with Leif Ottosson and Dag Westling.
