Mats Edén, born in 1957, has his roots in the rich soil of Värmland. With a background as a composition student at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, his music ranges from the avant-garde to the very traditional. He is a nationally recognised master of melodeon, having been awarded the distinguished title of "Riksspelman" (master musician). His fiddle playing is both elegant and rough, with its own combination of Värmlandian and Norwegian sounds.
Mats has been a member of the acclaimed Swedish folk ensemble Groupa since its start in 1980 and writes most of the band's songs. His third solo album Milvus (with Jonas Simonson) was released on the ECM label. Mats has toured the US and Europe with Ale Möller and Lena Willemark in the ECM project Nordan. He has also frequently performed in duo with Tina Quartey, as well as in other projects, and has released several solo albums.
Mats is a lecturer at Malmö Academy of Music, where he teaches main instrument, music theory and ensemble. He is a member of the Academy of Music, FST and SKAP.
