Marcus Bäckerud | Violin
Violinist Marcus Bäckerud grew up in Torna Hällestad outside Lund in southern Sweden and began playing the violin at the age of six. After early years in the world of folk music, he switched to classical violin at the age of eight and has since studied at several music colleges in the Nordic countries. He first studied for his bachelor's degree at the Royal College of Music at Edsberg Manor in Stockholm, then his master's degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and finally the diploma programme at Malmö Academy of Music, where he studied with Marika Fältskog, Jörgen Svensson and Erik Heide, among others.
During his studies, he won the Royal College of Music's soloist competition in 2019, which led to a solo concert with the college's symphony orchestra the following year. He has also performed as a soloist with several Swedish orchestras and has been noted for his expressive playing and technical brilliance.
Marcus has been principal second violinist with Malmö Symphony Orchestra since 2024. He has previously worked with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He is also an active chamber musician and member of the Monbijou Quartet, which was formed in Malmö and won first prize in the Young & Promising competition in 2023. The quartet has studied chamber music with Cuarteto Quiroga, The Danish String Quartet, Jerusalem Quartet and Tim Frederiksen, among others, and tours extensively in Sweden and abroad.
In 2025, Marcus received the newly established Anders Wall Music Prize, a prestigious scholarship awarded to young classical musicians with exceptional artistic potential.
