Hannes Wikström is a doctoral student in Music Education at Malmö Academy of Music, Lund University, starting in autumn 2024. He has previously trained as a musician at the School of Music, Theatre and Art, Örebro University, and is a licensed music teacher for primary and secondary schools, via a pedagogical postgraduate education (KPU) at Malmö Academy of Music, Lund University.
Alongside his doctoral studies, Hannes works as a part-time teacher in Kulturskolan (the Swedish municipal music school), as well as a guitarist and music creator.
Wikström's practice-oriented research project aims to study teaching and learning in Kulturskolan in the light of progressive educational theory and methodology. Specifically, the interest is directed towards project-based learning (PBL), where students learn and develop through active and exploratory participation in ‘real projects’ related to the ‘real world’, beyond the school framework. Within Kulturskolan, such learning can take the form of, for example, concert projects in public settings, vernissages and interdisciplinary thematic performances (etc.).
The hope is that the research will contribute to increased knowledge about how the teaching practice of Kulturskolan can be understood and described, as well as perspectives on how it can be developed. The study's practice-oriented methodology also aims to reduce the distance between Music Education theory and everyday practice, and to strengthen the researched practice based on the key words: ‘win-win for Kulturskolan and the academy’.
