Lena Ekman Frisk earned her undergraduate degree in music education at the Malmö Academy of Music in 1985. Ms. Ekman Frisk received her master’s degree in choral conducting at the Malmö Academy of Music in 1993.
Since 2000, Ms. Ekman Frisk teaches choral singing, methods, conducting and repertoire at the Malmö Academy of Music. 2012 she was promoted to Senior Lecturer.
Ekman Frisk also serves as the director within Körcentrum Syd, Southern Choral Centre. Souhern Choral Centre is a cooperation between several distinguished music and educational institutions and the common goal is to stimulate choral activities and choral education in the southernmost part of Sweden.
Academic year 2005–2006 she made a faculty exchange with Dr. Mark Munson, American choral director and university teacher. During this year, she taught choral conducting, methods and repertoire at College of Musical Arts, Bowling Green State University, Ohio, U.S.A. She also conducted The University Womens Chorus.
In 2011 she founded the Malmö Academy of Music Womens Chorus. The Chorus takes part in various concert projects at the Academy and creates concerts in collaboration with other choruses. March 2014 the Womens Chorus performed on the International Womens Day on March 8 with a program consisting of music only by female composers. The concert was recorded and broadcasted by the Swedish Radio. 2015 the chorus released its first CD: Spring Sketches, in 2019 the second one, Good Tidings, came and in 2023 Autumn Landscapes was released.
From 2003, she also holds the position of conductor of Christianstad Motet Choir. Several productions have taken place together with Christianstad’s Symphony Orchestra, such as Orff’s Carmina Burana, Rutter’s Magnificat, Jenkins’ The Armed Man, Kodaly’s Missa Brevis and Mozart’s Requiem. Spring 2008, the Motet Choir performed Lindberg’s Requiem, a mass in a mixed jazz and folklore style with Monday Night Big Band. Christianstad’s Motet Choir competed november 2007 in Warszaw International Choral Competition, where they received a first place in their category; mixed, adult choruses. 2013 the choir celebrated its 150-years anniversary, and received this year the Culture Award from Kristianstad’s Newspaper.
Lena Ekman Frisk has an extensive professional experience, including appointments at several primary and secondary schools, where she taught general music and directed choirs.
Ekman Frisk lives in Höör, where she also worked for several years within the municipal Music School, well-known for its ambitious musical and opera projects.
1983–1997 Ms. Ekman Frisk was Conductor of Husets Kör (House Choir), Malmö, working with choral theatre projects with free music groups.
Teaching at Kristianstad magnet school music profiled classes at Fröknegård School, Kristianstad was her major appointment 1996–2008. Main focus was choir singing with grades 6-9 but also eurytmics, drama, djembedrums, ear training and music theory was taught. Every year traditional Lucia and Spring concerts were performed in Kristianstad’s Concert Hall with all 180 students. Two CD-recordings with Lucia and Christmas music were recorded.
Ms. Ekman Frisk was also engaged 2000-2015 in regular summer courses for choral singers, organised by Music Weeks in Sweden Society, every time featured a major choral work. Ms. Ekman Frisk conducted the children’s and youth choir and directed the vocal training and warm-up of the adult choir.
Since 2010, Lena Ekman Frisks holds the position as president of the Swedish Choral Directors’ Association.
